Glass/Mirror Info

Glass/Mirror Info

Clear – Clear glass is not actually optically clear, that is, without tint.  There is a slight greenish tint to “clear” glass. All glass thicknesses are made using the same materials.  The thicker the glass, the darker this effect will become.

Smoked – In opposition to clear glass, “smoked” implies tinted or not clear.  Tinted glass comes in a few shades, with bronze and grey being the most common.

Bronze – Brownish tint. Can be mirrored to create bronze mirror.

Grey – Grey tint. Can be mirrored to create grey mirror.

Black – Extremely dark grey tint.  This glass can be mirrored to create black mirror.

Low-Iron Glass – This makes the glass have less green tint than normal clear glass. LESS green tint! NOT implying that the glass has no tint at all. The larger a piece of glass gets the darker the tint will become. Starphire® is a brand name of low-iron glass.

Exotics – Colors usually vary in a range of blue/green. Availability can be sporatic.

Back Painted – If you have a need for a more vibrant color, we do have a source to have painted glass fabricated. There are some basic colors, but almost anything is possible.

Edgework

Edgework

Non-Polished Profiles

Seamed Edge– This edge is done with a hand grinder or upright belt sander. Really this is more of a safety precaution than edgework.  Seamed edges are the least expensive however they are not really for decorative use.  We will not sell cut glass, all glass that leaves our shop must be seamed.

Ground Edge– This is a step up from the seam, done on a machine, given a flat ground edge.  Any of our polished profiles can be done in a ground edge.

Polished Profiles

Beveled Edge – A Bevel is an angle on the top of the glass around the perimeter.  It can be done on glass from 1/8 to 3/4 inch thick.  The bevel range is up to 1-1/2 inches wide.  Most any shape can be beveled, for details regarding special shapes, please contact us.

Flat Polished Edge – Flat polished edges are the staple of our industry.  It is a very simple, clean, and popular edge, the vast majority of glass leaving our shop is Flat Polished.  Our Flat polish can be put on straight or curved edges.

Pencil Polished Edge – This edge refers to a rounded edge as opposed to the flat edge above. A slightly different look, a classic appearance. Also available on straight or curved edges.

Bullnose Edge – The Bullnose is a slightly rounded edge. With a cross section in the form of a quarter circle.

Ogee Edge – This is an S-shaped curve.  This is a very elegant edge only available using 1/2 inch and 3/4 inch glass.

Triple Pencil – Waterfall is another name for this profile.  Triple pencil edgework in only available on 3/4 inch glass.

Shapes

Shape Descriptions

Rectangles, Squares – This is generally the least expensive option.  May seems very bland, however, add a bevel or special edge and the watch the wow factor increase.

Polygons, triangle, hexagon, octagon, etc. – Just give us the number of equal sides, or the distance across and we will put the edge on it.

Diameters – aka Circles. We can put an edge on diameters up to 72 inches.

Ovals, Ellipses – Race track ovals and elliptical ovals up to 120 inches long and 72 inches wide.

Custom Patterns and shapes – Any pattern that fits inside our 120 x 72 inches parameter. With a good paper pattern, wood pattern or digital drawing, most shapes are possible.
